CVR is proud to announce…..
Our final prize announcement
The remix competition is heating up, and if you haven’t entered yet, I’m not entirely sure why you haven’t gotten on it yet, but today we have a VERY special announcement.
As I detailed last week, our Special Guest sponsor, Artistry Audio, is launching a brand new product. They were gracious enough to let me take a spin around this Kontakt instrument for a couple of weeks, and I’m so impressed by this, I was just itching to let everyone know about it! So without further ado, let’s get to the nitty gritty, bassy wobbles that are found in MONOLITH.
Monolith
First are the details, this is a kontakt instrument, BUT, the great part, is Artistry has made it available for Kontakt Player, and not restricted it to Full Kontakt, so anyone can use this, by just installing Native Instruments free version of their sample infamous sample player.
Whether you love Kontakt for all the amazing sounds that you can enjoy, or you find the Kontakt interface to be a bit quirky, Artistry Audio have really done a number to make Monolith incredibly user friendly.
Immediately upon opening, it’s easy to see exactly what this instrument is all about. On top of that, Artistry Audio have done something that is always a bug in my side, by registering Monolith with Native Instruments, to be supported as a library in Native Access, creating its own listing with graphic in the library, so you don’t have to search for it in your files.
What Exactly is MONOLITH?
Artistry Audio call this an INFINITE BASS ENGINE with 350 master presets, 200+ core presets, 100+ Effects presets, 50+ Arp presets, 85 multisample Bass Instruments totalling 5.72GB’s worth of sounds.
All of the sounds are incredibly high quality, and developed specifically with earth shattering bass in mind. To say this is a BEAST of a library is really an understatement.
Every preset is a bold and powerful representation of what Bass should sound like, and will have you experimenting and creating in seconds. The presets open the door to booming, blasting and rupturing the sound scape with just the right amount of dirt and grit. To show you exactly why I’ve been so excited about this library, here are a few examples of the sounds you can create, with no adjustments, out of the box with Monolith.
Customizations That Make Sense
Another major issue I’ve had with Kontakt instruments in the past, have been the limited ability to customize the preset or library to fit your need. With Monolith, this isn’t an issue. An entire panel is dedicated to customization of the waveforms and playback. Change the mix on the opening page between the two samples selected, and dial in the right amount of each character for that perfect sound.
Can’t find exactly the right mix, drag and drop a sample directly into the engine, and get to just the right amount of wrong pushed through your audio output.
If all that didn’t do it for you, hit the randomization engine, and see if some chaos magic will work like the scarlet witch to change your reality, into a dazzling presentation of bass heaven.
Macros Are Fun
Oftentimes, the difference between a good track, and a great track, is the automations and how they’re used to make sounds move, breath, evolve and change over time. Monolith has multiple parameters directly available to assign to any MIDI control, or DAW input, to automate your bass with ease.
Create dynamic playbacks, that slam the listener with sounds, and then dial them back, to tease another upcoming assault on the ears. Mutate your bass with a quick click, or set up complex and intricate squenced arpeggios that growl to life as filters, reverbs, delays tubes and EQ’s move the sound.
Win yourself a copy!
The best part of all, is YOU could win a copy of this absolutely STUNNING library, by getting a remix done of Sacramento. Grab the STEMs here:
If you want to check out more Artistry Audio work, Scorpio is a killer library that I’ve been enjoying for months, and used in several of my own personal tracks. Support them by following them here:
And stay tuned for this up and coming sample company, as they continue to push the boundaries of sound with awesome releases like Monolith. I can already tell this will be a library that I come back to time and again when I want that bass to hit properly.
Remix Competition is Live!
The Remix Competition is Live!!
First, if you haven’t gotten the STEMs yet for the remix competition, what in the world are you waiting for?!?! This remix competition is bigger than ever, with amazing prizes from our sponsors who I’m going to be discussing later…..but mainly, this track is absolutely AMAZING!
The story behind Nikmind’s track is incredible. 8 months of work went into this one, and when it was finished, it was a stunner. The synth work was definitely profound, from the FM stabs that sit beautifully in the mix, to the flying lead that delays and flouts throughout the break and the drop. The quality of work here is evident in every piece of this song.
There are an infinite number of ways that you can take this remix, and we’re looking forward to all of the different iterations we get to listen to, and this judging session is going to be TOUGH. You all blow me away constantly with your talent, and this showcase is going to be more of just how amazing this community truly is, with phenomenal musicians. Best of luck to everyone!!
Please support our sponsors
Without the support of the sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to put together these prize packages, that are truly incredible. Winning just one of the prizes, is going to greatly increase the tools that any producer has available to them. This competition is MASSIVE! We are so lucky to have companies willing to partner with us and give their support to CVR and our label’s goal, to help educate and promote artists who just need that shot or someone to tell them they’re doing the right thing.
In order to keep these competitions happening, we need to give back to these companies, by supporting their products, and making sure they see the benefit to working with us. I’m going to be doing reviews of each of the prizes in the coming weeks here, but I implore you to go get on the mailing lists, sign up for the newsletters, and follow the social media accounts for these companies, and if you are looking for an additional tool to work on a track, I’ll make a couple suggestions on my favorite releases from them, that are not included in the prizes at this time (maybe in the future?)
Who are our sponsors
The Big guy!
IK Multimedia jumped on board with a tremendous offer, to allow us to send a hardware synth, anywhere in the world to the winner, but they aren’t just a hardware manufacturer. I personally jumped on their 25th anniversary group buy, and so I own just about every plug in and sound bank that they currently make. I also am the proud owner of the Uno Synth Pro, which has found its way into my workflow, by being an incredible sounding paraphonic instrument, that makes all the GRRS and Bleeps and Bloops you could possibly want. Their group buys offer profound discounts on incredible software that they offer.
Syntronik 2 competes extremely well with the likes of UVI Vintage Vault or Arturia Collection. It’s an absolutely stellar collection of synth sounds, that’s massive in its depth, but easy to navigate. If you don’t have an IK multimedia plug in, they offer a free version of both Sample Tank, in Sample Tank CS and Syntronik with Syntronik CS. For free, you can grab some great presets and sounds that will immediately fit into any production. The quality of the samples is top notch.
Keep an eye out for regular give aways of their tools like Black 76 and Classic Clipper, which I use all the time when I need compressors or clippers for getting my sound to that competitive level. Classic Clipper is one of my favorite plug ins, and commonly is found multiple times in my mixing sessions.
Our Veteren Sponsors
Cherry Audio has done a tremendous job of emulating the analog warmth of old models of synths. We’re excited to give away Elka-X, which is a rare synth to recreate. My personal favorite model of theirs is the Dreamsynth, with some absolutely unique features, that make the workflow easy to understand and incredibly powerful for any genre, from Tech House to Techno to Trance and DnB, it’s easy to make a sound that will fit in all the genres in between, and at $40, you could spend a LOT more on a different synth, and get less features. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to add to their synth arsenal without breaking the bank.
If you want to try out something free, and find out why people love Cherry’s UI, and have any interest in learning modular synthesis, VM Nucleus is right for you. The world of modular synthesis is vast, but VM gives you a quick introduction into CV controls, and clocks and LFOs in an easy to understand format, that can be fun just to sit and experiment when you have a few minutes and need inspiration.
D16 group has been with us from the beginning, and their generosity in regards to helping us launch this remix series, makes me one of their biggest supporters!
Their FX silver series of processes sound INCREDIBLE, while offering a clean and efficient UI that is pleasing to the eyes, and easy to understand what and why things are happening. The free Frontier limiter gets great press and reviews from multiple places on the interwebs, and if you don’t already have this in your toolbox, it’s an easy way to understand why so many people are raving about D16’s work, and excited to see what they come up with next. Go grab this free tool now.
Baby Audio’s plugins are typically very simple, yet hide a complex inner working, that help you get your sound exactly to the level you want it.
Their free tools are a must own in any DAW, as the magic switch instantly makes chorus’s fun, and full sounding. If you want to add some randomization into your workflow, hit the Magic Dice, and see what weirdness you can get by a push of a button.
Baby Comeback allows for interesting delays to happen in your production, with just a few quick flicks of a knob or switch on the front. Delays are one of the best ways to add space to your sound, and this baby has an adult size understanding of what it takes to make those spaces sound good.
The Newcomers
Abstrakt Music Lab was formed by Leo Lauretti, with the same goals as CVR. Leo is a master at sound re-creation with his youtube series, where he shows you how to achieve a similar sound to your favorite artists, but beyond that, he has tools that are available for any producer, including a weekly blog post, and 1on1 lessons that will help you get to that next level you want to be.
Get on his mailing list and get tips for growing your music career from someone who’s been in the industry long enough to show you the ropes. Watch his youtube channel and learn from one of the best at his craft today.
Label Radar is, at least in my opinion, the BEST way to submit your track to labels for their consideration. No searching for emails, no needing to track down the A&R person, just submit on the platform, and get instant access to the people you need to grow. They have a free subscription service, where you get 1 submission a month, and NOT taking advantage of this, means you’re missing out for no reason at all.
The Special Guest
Artistry Audio is a company I discovered when I was looking for fun and interesting Kontakt instruments, and boy have they not disappointed me. Their release, Scorpio, has an amazing library of sounds that come at you with power, and resolve, to blow away your listeners, with how raw, and dirty, yet refined granular synth engines can be.
There is no way that using this library is going to disappoint you in any way, I can personally guarantee it.
The reason for putting them as a “special guest appearance” is they were gracious enough, to let us give away a copy of their next release, that is bigger, badder, and better than ever! We’re not even allowed to talk about it yet, but once you hear the sounds that are coming out of this library, if it doesn’t blow you away, you have a serious case of hearing loss, and you should definitely see a doctor for that!
When I opened it for the first time, I never thought they would be able to make something 3 or 4x as good as Scorpio, but boy have they done it. It’s easily my new favorite soundback for Kontakt, and I’m not even allowed to say its name!!!!
Please head over to the links above, grab the free tools these companies give away, and support them in what they do, so we can keep giving you amazing prize packages for these competitions, and keep the CVR goals moving forward. We want to help you get better, and that starts by having tremendous partners to work with!

Synthesizer Hardware Update & News August 2022
Synthesizer Hardware Update & News August 2022
As we get moving on our blog, we are anticipating that some of you are like us, and have GAS hard. Getting new gear or just generally lusting after that incredible piece of noise making thing a ma bob hits most eventually.
If you’re a complete “in the box” producer, I commend you for never venturing out into the costly, expensive world and forever changing and expanding hardware and your wallet is probably the better for it.
For the rest of us, who have started a collection of odds and ends, of bleeps and bloop makers, this update is for you. Here’s the important news headlines, all in one place that we’re interested in.
Melbourne Instruments Nina Synth
We will start in the world of Synthesizers, and present a review for one of the most interesting synth products to be announced this last year.
The Melbourne Instruments Nina Synth, which uses rotary knobs, that move around when you make different adjustments, like a magician waving his hand over a deck of cards and having one float up in your face.
While this isn’t breaking news for this month, as the synth was presented at NAMM this year, we now have a kickstarter where you can go and get your orders in for this wizardry. It’s NOT cheap though, so be prepared to open that pocketbook.
What you do get for that investment, is an incredible sounding, 12 voice, polyphonic synth that will impress all your music making friends, or catch all your tears as you remember you make music, and so no one comes to visit you in your studio while you play on your keyboards.
WMD Synth News
The world of synths has also had some bad news, with two items that are worth reporting, even if they do make us sob uncontrollably into our pillows at night.
WMD, a eurorack module maker who makes instruments that are worth owning, announced that they won’t be able to keep the doors open after the end of the year.
This hurts the already weakened eurorack world, that was still getting over Mutable Instruments announcement of the same nature just a few months ago.
Get your eurorack modules while you can, if you’re into rat’s nest of cables, and plugging patches while your generative math modules spit out continually evolving goodness through your speakers. It’s going to be a dark winter in the module world.
Moog announcement
On top of this uplifting news, Moog recently announced price increases across the board to counter inflation, and the continued import taxes that are being levied on Chinese goods, which aren’t going away any time soon.
That means your grandmother is one expensive lady, and your matriarch is now in the upper echelon of womanhood costs. If you want a One, the amazing 16 voice synth that will make your best friend cry tears of joy when it plays (results not guaranteed) you’ll be ponying up a downpayment on an electric vehicle…..well it would be if you could buy a car right now, but good luck with that.
On a lighter note news from Lindell Audio
It’s not all bad news on the hardware front, there’s a new pre-order page for a vintage styled 1176 compressor from Lindell Audio at what can be considered a reasonable price these days.
It’s not shipping yet, but at this cost, it might be worth getting on the list, as hardware rack mounted compressors that have this vintage style, are going for a lot more than the pre-order price listed on their website.
Signing off
So that’s the news we’ve heard about hardware related items that we’re interested in this month, let us know if we missed something that you’ve got your eye on, or something that’s been sitting in your cart while you ponder whether top ramen is considered a food group good enough to eat for a year while you pay off the debt after you hit the purchase button.

Audiomodern Playbeat 3 & Ethereal Drums Kontakt library tutorials
August vst review and tuToRials by brian g
Welcome to the first edition of the CVR blog. We’re going to start working on topics that we think everyone will enjoy, and get value from them week to week. So keep your eye on this page, as we cover topics ranging from VSTs to hardware news, production tips, and our release calendar.
Each of the CVR artists is going to take on a topic that’s specific to us, and one of our passions. My name is Brian G, and I’m going to be covering VSTs and show off a few cool VSTs that I’ve been playing with each month, as well as covering some of my favorite plug ins and tips for using them.
This month, I have 1 drum VST and a Kontakt Drum Instrument to cover, as I’ve been getting my focus on grooves and rhythms. So let’s dive in, and find out what I’ve been playing with in the month of August.
Audiomodern Playbeat 3
First up is Audiomoderns Playbeat 3. I can without a doubt say, this is an incredible plug in, that will have you coming up with brand new rhythmic ideas in a matter of a few clicks. With its AI algorithm, it also integrates some magic (artificial intelligence), that somehow knows exactly what you like (it uses math and stuff) and pushes out rhythms you never thought possible (well, you may think they’re possible in like 5 years when you have tried everything)…..I’m skeptical of AI type programs, as the instances of AI used in plug ins has been hit and miss, from bad chord progressions and odd EQ decisions, AI sometimes doesn’t really live up to the intelligent part.
With playbeat, I can honestly say that this thing is a super cheat code for making percussions that will give your track that extra something that no one has really heard before. Just add in whatever sounds you want to the kit, and press the red button, and viola, we have fire! Well not literally, because this isn’t CPU intensive enough to burn down your house. But there are definitely fire beatz happening.
Here’s a quick step guide to getting your percussion rhythms immediately 80x better than you’ve ever had them in your musical career, with just a few simple clicks.
Super clean interface greets you with up to 8 slots for different percussion, claps, hats, kick drums or whatever particular sound you want to load into the unit. There are also preset kits you can use at the top, to load presets that they provide, or click the save button to save a pack of sounds you like, and recall it for later.
To load a new sound, select the sound number, 1-8 on the side, and drag and drop the sound where you see the plus symbol.
Load it all the way up, or just as few as you like. I have tended to like between 6-8 sounds to get a good rhythm, but play around, and see what works best. If you use a kick drum, keep it in spot 1, as that’s typically where your down beat will be populated, but it’s also a good place to load up something interesting like a tom or rhythm lower perc.
Now that you’ve loaded it all with sounds, the fun begins.
Select the number of steps you want to have the probability effect, how dense you want the patterns to be, how much the possibility of each sound pitches up or down, whether you want the sound to flam and create a triplet style sound, how much volume changes suite you, and what kind of panning structures are interest.
![]()
You can set these values globally, or on an individual track, either way, this will determine the amount of adjustment each of your hits of the magic red dot, is going to give you something spectacular or not.
Adjust the red dot to indicate the pattern randomization:

And time to press away!
The video demo above shows what you can come up with, and exactly how fast it will go!
You can have up to 16 different patterns saved in the slots along the bottom of the plug in:
![]()
Other interesting inclusions are sample editors, shift control, shuffle application, and export capabilities that allow you individually export each track, or the pattern as a whole in a single percussion loop for re-editing in the DAW.
The final tip, is to really have some fun, and run the signal through any modulating fx processing, whether that be a multiband processor like Multi-Pass by Kilohearts, or a multi-FX platform like DS Tantra 2, or distortion modulation like Minimal Audio’s Rift.
Ethereal Drums by Ethereal Audio for Kontakt 6 paid version only
Kontakt offers a world of sound sampling that can seem a bit overwhelming on the choices you have in order to find even a good sound that you want to use. While the platform is probably the most robust sample library on the planet, having an infinite choice of options to choose where to spend your hard earned dollars, can be rather intimidating, and cause you to get paralysis by analysis.
I would like to spotlight a few libraries that I’ve found, that I think are great additions to your library of sounds, while also potentially uncovering some under-represented gems in the Kontakt ecosphere that may go unnoticed.
Ethereal Audio’s Ethereal Drums is exactly that type of a release. Released without much fanfare earlier this year, and still available with their introduction discount, I discovered this little gem of a library by meeting the maker at an unexpected gathering of musicians a few months back. Since that time I’ve stayed in communication with him in anticipation of this launch.
This collection of drums, was recorded in studio, with each instrument meticulously recorded and curated to create one of the better sounding drum kits, that I’ve had the pleasure of working with, and an interface that has some very intuitive features that immediately show how quickly and easily you can find the right sounds for really any style of track, be it rock, electronic, hip hop or DnB.
To start, the interface is very clean, with a kit that has individual drop down menus available for each of the available instruments. Kick, snare, open hat, closed hat, crash & cymbal are all available for your customization, and make choosing the right sound, a quick breeze.

In the world of drum kits, Steven Slate drums & IK Multimedia’s Modo Drums are the two heavy weights, and they over complicate the interfaces, while also overwhelm the user with options that at times, seem completely unnecessary for getting just a clean, solid sound, without much work.
Ethereal Drums, skips the overcomplication of the initial screen in favor of hiding the settings in a mixer panel, that does a better job presenting what changes you can make to your sound that anyone can follow along with.
If you want a quick beat to simply get something down fast, select one of the presets available for the genre of music you plan to make. These move quickly, load fast, and are immediately available to play without hogging your memory for each preset. The interface is very snappy, and loads the next drum kit on my machine, with ease, and I haven’t found any errors in switching quickly back and forth.
If you want to test out the drum kit, just click on MIDI, and you’ll get several rhythmic presets to allow you to try out the sounds, without committing to programming your sequences up front. In this video example, I try out the drum and bass MIDIs and flip through a few presets of sounds, to try and just listen to how clean or how dirty I can get the sounds to balance out.
Each of the instruments, again, can get customized as soon as you switch into the mixer, and see all the various controls you have, to dial in that proper sound you need for the instrument in question.

While the color scheme is a bit unconventional, and the GUI for the mixer could use some smoothing of the edges, the functionality is what you pay for, and in this regard, you can’t ask for a more functional control panel, that allows for reverb, axis of hit, tune of each drum, transient shaping, equalization, compression & ADSR that will get you moving quickly towards dialing in these sounds to exactly the timbre and tone that you’re looking for.
On top of the controls for the shape of the sound, each instrument has an option for mic changes, and a good variety of mic types, that again, affect how each sound is represented to track. These loads happen quickly and make this one of the more indepth drum programs available, while making sure that you know exactly how each utility makes its adjustments.
While there are probably a few better looking drum libraries that are available on the market, Kontakt instruments are all about what type of a sound comes from the sampler, and when it comes to a clean representation of each individual drum sound, Ethereal really shines. You can hear the care each recording was done with, and how clean the processing was on the original sound, and the algorithms that are needed for each adjustment of the type of hit, from velocity curves to mic type, is done with a transparency, that makes you think there are millions of samples for each change in the dynamics. There’s no way this could be possible with the small memory load of each preset and instrument presentation, which makes the programming of this style of library an impressive feat of software coding.
You could spend on Slate or Ik Multimedia’s version of the same package, and get the drum sounds that have been used in countless bars of music before, or you can support an independent developer, and get a sound library that was cared for, and loaded in an intuitive, and deceptively complex package, that gives you all the tools to get immediately into programming a drum package for your next track.
They also have a free demo version that you can try out for free, before committing to the full package, so test it out, take a trial run, and see if this instrument is right for your collection. The one thing it will give you, is a unique drum set up, that you potentially won’t hear on best producer friend’s track any time soon, unless you plan on collabing and letting them in on the awesome new package you just acquired.
So that does it, volume 1 of the CVR blog is in the books. Next week, will be a totally new topic, that will cover a different area of production, or the label news, as we keep you updated on all things music and label related. I really hope you have enjoyed my little non sequiturs and descriptive language, and I’ll be back with more VSTs soon that you can drop your credit card down on the table……no literally, it’s maxed out anyway…..and spend your hard earned cash on chasing that one sound!
